CHESTER

The Romans originally settled in Chester as Fortress Deva, named after the River Dee. It still has imposing walls with some of the Roman structures visible. These walls were strengthened by Acthgelflaeda before the late centuary. These walls can be accessed within 200 m of Gove Villa.

William the Conqueror made his nephew Hugh the Wolf the first Earl of Chester and during his reign Chester Caste was built.

From the 16 th century the walls were restyled into a promenade as they were not longer needed for defence. As the industrial revolution tool grip the Victorians restored many building and erected the Eastgate Clock. One way to explore Chester’s rich heritage is to follow the Chester Millenium Way, this covers 40 important buildings.

Chester’s heritage spans numerous centuries with many historical places of interest including a Normal Cathedral, medieval rows , a 16 th century racecource, Victorian parks and a Roma Amphitheatre wto mention but a few.

The city centre has a wide range of international shops as well as local outlets. A significant area is pedestrionised with an indoor shopping mall.

Chester is also an ideal base from which to explore North Wales and the Cheshire countryside. There are multiple attractions within 1 hours drive as well as excellent public transport links.
